Probate

Probate is the legal bridge that provides for the transfer of a decedent's property to the people who inherit it. It is the legal process that includes:

  • Filing the deceased person's will with the court
  • Identifying and inventorying the deceased person's property
  • Having the property appraised
  • Paying off debts, including death tax if applicable
  • Distributing what's left as the will directs

How Long Does Probate Take?
Usually 10 months to 2 years. Assuming the proper documents have been created prior to the person's demise, tens of thousands of dollars can be saved by the estate. In addition, having the proper documentation ensures that heirs get their inheritance in a timely fashion.
